What is Out of Phase?

When the combination of two coils or bobbins are electrically or magnetically out of phase. Two bobbins can be wound in the same direction but are hooked up opposite: This is an example having two bobbins with the same polarity.

  1. Coil (1) the beginning is grounded and the finish is positive.
  2. Coil (2) the beginning is positive and the finish is grounded.

Hooking up the coils in various ways can determine if a pickup will be in or out of phase.
